Beyond Belief
(2011)
Two channel sound
A text-based sound piece in which a quotation from J.G. Ballard’s text ‘What I Believe’ (1984) is read by the artist. Although the text would appear to be an re-presentation of an existing work, the content of the text has been altered by the substitution of elements in the source text for elements taken from the text of Alfred Jarry’s ‘The Crucifixion Considered as an Uphill Bicycle Race’ (which was appropriated by Ballard for his text ‘The Assassination of JFK Considered as a Downhill Motor Race’).
Engaging with Ballard’s interest in appropriation and collage, the texts combine to create a new piece with different and new meanings.
Exhibited in the group exhibition Crash at VIVID Birmingham Centre for Media Arts (Birmingham).
